Yesterday I subbed at one of the local high schools. I've been there several times including one day last October where I spent all day supervising a study hall while half the school took the PSAT. During one of the sessions that day, one of my students was helping a friend "Maria" create a character for an RPG game that I also play. I had a fantastic time chatting with them about the game and they also seemed to have a great time.
Well, yesterday I had one of the students in my class again. When she saw me she said, "It's my favorite sub, and we're watching my favorite movie today!" Totally made my day! This is why Maria is my Gold Star of the Week! Congrats Maria.
Also, said movie was the end of "Dead Poet's Society. Unfortunately, my first period class didn't quite get to finish the film. They wound up ending right after the main character kills himself and then all his friends found out and were really sad. Yup, that's how I began the day with thirty tenth graders. I apologized for starting their day off with a depressing film and promised that it would be much better when they finished the film tomorrow!
